This quiz can tell where you’re from by how you talk

In 2002, Bert Vaux and Scott Golder began the Harvard Dialect Survey. Over 350,000 responses later, a 25-question quiz built from the survey can predict, with unnerving accuracy, not just where you’re from — but where else you’ve lived, and who’s influenced you.

My results, for instance, pegged me as from Southern California and New York. Which makes sense. The quiz said I’m from Southern California, but it picked up a strong New York influence in my language. Sure enough, my mother moved to California from New York. And a weirdly large number of my good friends today are from New York.
