Fortune cookies are actually Japanese, and other surprising cookie facts

The chart above gives the place and date of the genesis of 30 well-known cookies. Determining precisely where and when a cookie originated is difficult, of course. The fortune cookie is originally Japanese and arguably older than shown here, but it only entered mass production in the 20th century in the United States. The French macaron has existed in some form for centuries, but the widely popular contemporary version is only about a hundred years old. Many thanks to SweeTooth Design for sharing this chart with Know More. If you’d like a copy for your wall, check out their Kickstarter page.
