A big age gap between spouses is a recipe for divorce

A big age gap between spouses is a recipe for divorce

Perhaps unsurprisingly, being old enough to be your spouse’s parent is a good predictor of divorce. Data tinkerer Randal Olson drew this data from a recent study, called “’A Diamond is Forever’ and Other Fairy Tales,” which surveyed thousands of married and divorced Americans. The study highlighted dozens predictors of stable and unstable marriages – including the age gap pictured above.

The bar on the left serves as a reference point, with all other percentage points given in reference to that bar. So couples with a 30-year age difference are 172% more likely to get a divorce than those with no difference in their ages.
