World of Warcraft’s obscene dominance of the game world

World of Warcraft’s obscene dominance of the game world

Do you or someone you know play World of Warcraft? Given that the massively multiplayer online role playing game, or MMORPG, had more than 7 million players at the end of the September, down from an all-time high of 12 million subscribers, the answer is probably yes.

For the graphic above, data tinkerer Randy Olson mapped total MMORGP subscriptions by game every month between 1998 and 2013. The graphic shows just how much World of Warcraft has dominated the game world since 2005. Before that, the biggest game by far was Lineage, which had a big player base in South Korea.
